9th Annual Nick Corbo
Community Service Award

The Nick Corbo Community Service Award, is awarded to a member of society who best exemplifies the dedication and selflessness to better the youth of the Stamford Community.

This year’s award is being given to - Jerry LaMotta Sr.

winner Jerry was born and raised in Stamford and attended Stamford schools. As a boy, he would play all kinds of sports with his friends including Jack Smyth and participated in the YMCA sports programs.

When Jerry's sons, Butch and Michael join the American Little League in 1969, he started coaching them and players like Frank Rampanan. He then went on to coach his grandson's Sean, Brett and Zack, until they moved up to Stamford Babe Ruth. Even after they moved to Babe Ruth, he continued to coach at Stamford-American.

Jerry coached for 42 years in the Stamford American Little League. His love of the game and teaching young boys and girls the game of baseball kept him coming back each year. Jerry's proudest year as a coach in 2004, when Stamford-American won the championship and his grandson Brett led the league in homeruns.

He still enjoys going and watching games especially when his great nephews play. One of his other favorite pastimes is his daily routine of visiting Beldotti Bakery. The conversations there are always about baseball and Stamford American Little League. Jerry has made many friends thru the years with members of the Stamford baseball family. A few years ago, Stamford American honored Jerry naming their summer tournament the Jerry LaMotta tournament.

The Award Ceremony will be on Sunday, Aug. 6 @ 7:30pm on the Cubeta Stadium field.
